Understanding Common Acronyms within your Integrated Management System

Have you ever sat in a meeting and not understood what anyone is saying because you’re one of the new guys and everyone is using acronyms within the meeting?

This affects far too many people, as most of the time, we are too scared to put our hands up and say "what does that actually mean?"

In this blog, I'm going to provide you with a strategy you can use to address this feeling of uncertainty.

Watch the video below to hear me explain some common acronyms and find out why I have appointed myself the President of the Australian Association Against Acronym Abuse (AAAAA).

If your new in a business and have to put up with acronyms would you understand them?

Some examples of the Acronyms I am talking about are:

  • NCR

  • SWOT

  • ISO

  • QA

  • PPE

  • OFI

  • KPI

  • EHSQ, QHSE, SHEQ

What do they all mean? Oftentimes, employees (particularly new ones) will take a stab in the dark to try and keep up with what their coworkers or related documentation is stating.

The uncertainty around what people are talking about can lead to a decrease in productivity and workflow, as employees will not be able to keep up with what is being discussed.

To get around this uncertainty, what we’ve suggested to our clients is to develop an acronym bible or an acronym table, personalized to their organisation.

This Acronym bible can be given to new staff upon induction and on boarding, it can be printed and put on the wall of meeting rooms. Doing this will ensure that all employees are on the same page with what is being discussed, bring many benefits to your organisation.

You can download an example of an Acronym bible here. Alter and add to this to suit your organisation.
