Small business rebate  

Receive up to $500 to help your small business be smarter and safer through the small business rebate program. 

The small business rebate gives up to $500 (full cost) back to small business owners who purchase and install safety equipment to address a safety problem in their workplace. It is open to small businesses or sole traders with up to 20 full time employees or equivalent, from 1 March 2012.  

Free safety advisors are also available to help build safety skills for you and your staff.


Eligible safety equipment

The small business rebates cover a broad range of safety solutions to give small businesses the flexibility to fix specific risks in their individual workplace.

The rebate can be used to assist with the purchase and installation of safety equipment that addresses:

  • manual handling
  • hazardous noise
  • slips, trips and falls
  • injuries from moving objects 
  • chemicals and dangerous goods.

The rebate is provided after the solution has been purchased or implemented and excludes GST, freight and insurance. 


Applying for a rebate


Step one - attend a free WorkCover safety event

Attend any eligible WorkCover safety event, live webinar, workshop, program, event, or have a free advisory visit from a WorkCover business advisory officer or inspector from 1 March 2012.


Step two - implement your safety solution

Select and implement an eligible safety solution listed in the rebate application brochure. Get a paid tax invoice and receipt (or proof of purchase).


Step three - complete the application form

Complete and sign the rebate application form and attach a copy of your paid tax invoice and receipt.


Step four - post within six months of attending the WorkCover safety event

Send the rebate form to WorkCover within six months of the advisory visit, safety workshop, live webinar, program or event by:

Terms and conditions

You can claim for more than one eligible solution on your application form but can only apply once for the Small business rebate program. For example, you could purchase a number of safety solutions to prevent falls from a height - such as scaffolding, edge protection, and industrial fall arrest equipment - and include all three invoices in your one rebate application form. The application form outlines the terms and conditions for claiming a rebate and the eligible solutions that qualify.

Businesses urged to promote workplacesafety innovation

Businesses across New South Wales are invited to showcase their safety achievements by entering the 2012 WorkCover NSW SafeWork Awards.

The annual awards, now in their ninth year, reward and recognise high standards of work health and safety across the State’s workplaces.

General Manager of WorkCover’s Work Health and Safety Division, John Watson said the awards are an opportunity for businesses to showcase their approach to safety solutions, innovation and achievement with a state-wide audience.

“Business who enter can enhance their reputation, be a safety ambassador and gain recognition for safety benchmarks from their industry peers,” Mr Watson said.

Awards are available in four categories:

  • Best workplace health and safety management system
  • Best solution to an identified workplace health and safety issue
  • Best workplace health and safety practices in small business
  • Best individual contribution to workplace safety

Entries are open to any business, organisation, individual or not-for-profit organisation registered in New South Wales.

Entries will be short-listed by an assessment panel with finalists selected following a series of worksite visits.

Winners will be announced at a gala dinner event in Sydney in October.

“Winners from each category will receive national recognition for their contribution to workplace safety and will receive automatic entry in the 2013 National Safe Work Australia Awards,” Mr Watson said.

“Winners of the last year’s awards made a significant difference in their respective workplaces while also driving home the safety message of their core business and services to potential clients.

“Safety should be a number one priority in every workplace. We should all strive to develop a culture where everyone accepts responsibility for their own health and safety as well as their colleagues,” he said.

“WorkCover and the New South Wales government is committed to delivering improvements in workplace safety by working closely with industry to help make businesses more productive.

“I encourage all workplaces to highlight safety achievements by submitting an entry in this years awards,” Mr Watson said.

Entries are to be submitted online and close at midnight Friday June 8.
